Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police were called around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday to JC Penney at the Wheaton Mall, where a person barricaded themselves inside the store, which had to be evacuated.
For hours, police and SWAT teams swarmed around the store in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully, and at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, the agency said that the barricaded suspect has been taken into custody.
According to the police, there was no threat to the public, during the incident and the barricade is isolated to the one area inside the single store.
Officials said that JC Penney will be closed for the rest of the day following the standoff.
No information about the suspect or possible charges have been released by the police.
